At Brooklyn Roots Veterinary Hospital, our mission is to offer the type of veterinary care that we expect for our own animals. We believe that practicing the highest standards of veterinary medicine and surgery requires more than just what we learned in school. We strive to listen to and consider the varied needs of our patients and families. We are committed to creating a caring environment that fosters trust, support and a team approach. We also look outside our doors, and take measures to reduce our impact on our global community.
Rebecca Stronger, DVM
Dr. Rebecca Stronger graduated from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. She has extensive experience working in Referral Center Emergency/Critical Care Medicine, as well as in General Practice. She also has a special interest and advanced training in Veterinary Anesthesia and thrives doing the kind of work that feels most like saving lives.
Aside from her professional training, Dr. Stronger wants you to know that she was born and raised in Brooklyn and has also left the neighborhood quite a few times. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and family and even more loyal to her patients. She thinks that client education is just as important as the medicine that she practices, and will always do everything in her power to help her patients and their families in the ways that they need.
She also really really loves handstands.
Marcela Salas, VMD
(Gone but not forgotten…)
Dr. Salas was inspired very early on by Doctor Doolittle, by his innate desire to understand and help animals. He spoke to her then and still does today. He taught her that the best vets are humble and kind, and the advantages that lie in simply listening to and observing animals.
This, combined with a fascination for the natural world led Dr. Salas to the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with a a B.A in Anthropology in 1995 and a Veterinary Medical Doctor degree in 2000. She has lived in Brooklyn ever since.
Her goal is to help the pet guardian navigate through the process that is their pet´s physical and emotional health by offering experience and professionalism. Dr. Salas is interested in diagnostic imaging, dentistry, pocket pets and geriatrics. She feels honored to do what she does, and especially to be doing it with her longtime vet colleague and friend, Dr. Rebecca Stronger.
We are proud and grateful to have this exceptional support staff.
Lisett Lamour, L.V.T., B.S.
Lisett has been working in the animal field since she was 16 years old. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from The City College of New York and then pursued her Veterinary Technician degree soon thereafter. She has three fur babies and two human ones. Lisett’s areas of special interest include dentistry and anesthesia but gentle and expert nursing care of all creatures is her true forté.
Carmen Canton A.A.S.
Carmen Canton performs non-anesthetic dental cleanings at Brooklyn Roots. She was born and raised among her many animals in Managua, Nicaragua. At age 19, she moved to Miami, FL and quickly began to work at a nearby veterinary hospital. Her experience there inspired her to pursue her Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology at CUNY in NYC. Having witnessed the risks involved with conventional anesthesia, her initial exposure to safe, non-anesthetic dental cleaning left her feeling both relieved and encouraged that there was a method of providing a safe, preventative health service to pets.
Toby Brooklyn Roots D.S.H.
Toby is our hospital manager was educated on the streets of Brooklyn. He rules Brooklyn Roots with a gentle, yet firm paw. Although he wears many hats, his main responsibilities include patient advocacy and taste-testing all pet foods.
Adrian Hatche, B.S.
Adrian graduated from Utica College of Syracuse University in 2013 with a B.S. in Biology. She has been caring for animals in the veterinary field for four years, but in her heart -- since forever! Adrian calls herself a dog person, but is obsessed with her cat babies Martini and Edie. She also works at the Wildlife Health Center at the Bronx Zoo, and has grown fond of large animals and exotics (which she has decided will be her area of expertise in vet school). Truly, she loves all creatures great and small and strives to provide genuine care for all patients and their owners. On her free time she likes to laugh and enjoy nature. Adrian is also proud to contribute to our non-furry community by raising awareness of violence against women alongside her sisters of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Brooklyn Roots has been Katherine’s first foray into the veterinary field. She started out as a receptionist and has fast become an integral part of our veterinary team. In addition to her warm and friendly manner with clients and animals alike she’s a fantastic multi-tasker and as it turns out, excels with patient handling and care. She has also been known to expertly groom a sedated animal or two when the need arises! Above all else- she enjoys spending her time sharing her lunch and arguing with Toby - our famous hospital manager.
